The Bishop’s University Indigenous Cultural Alliance (ICA) created a memorial on campus to honour the lives of 215 children who were recently discovered in unmarked graves near a residential school in British Columbia.
ICA member Shawna Jerome led the charge to set up the memorial, with help from the Bishop’s administration team. She wants to collect 215 pairs of children’s shoes for the display, and place them around an orange t-shirt that reads, “Honouring residential school survivors.”
“It was kind of a quick decision. I was able to get all of the permission within the same day. People were super nice, and they helped me plant the stick […] I haven’t had any negative comments,” said Jerome.
