By Taylor McClure, Special to The Brome County News – This week, the Brome County News had the chance to visit the new Virgin Hill “L’atelier de café” that has recently opened its doors. We caught up with Tara Moar, who helped establish the Virgin Hill coffee brand alongside her husband Matthew Greer, to discuss the expansion and why it was important to them. Virgin Hill started out as a small business in the garage of Matthew’s grandpa’s home in North Hatley in 2005. From there, the business moved to Waterloo in 2011. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed various businesses there, including that of Virgin Hill.
The couple made the decision to rebuild their business in Waterloo and stayed there for almost ten years. They started talking about looking for a more permanent home and that is when they decided to move to their current location in Foster in November of last year. Regarding the choice of location, Tara explained that they had to be strategic because they have such a loyal customer base with various businesses in Brome Lake already selling their Virgin Hill products. “We didn’t want to be in competition with those who support us. We needed a strategic location where we were not stepping on our current customers toes. We want our customers to flourish. It was something we had to think about when we bought the building. ” With a successfully established business under their belts, they wanted to expand their brand.
