Liberals support Bloc Quebecois bill to protect supply management system

A bill in Ottawa to bar concessions undermining Canada’s supply management system for poultry, dairy, and eggs in international trade talks gained governmental support recently, with the Liberal Party throwing its support behind the Bloc Québecois’ initiative.

Speaking over the phone, Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food and MP for Compton—Stanstead, said C-282 would protect the supply management system from future governments in negotiations by preventing any “additional market share” from being given away.

“I think it’s going to be very, very good news for a big number of producers,” said Bibeau, who added that there are more than 400 dairy farms in the Townships, as well as a number of poultry and egg producers.
