Representatives of both ConcertAction Femmes Estrie (CAFE) and the Sherbrooke renters’ association gathered on the steps of the city’s courthouse on Tuesday morning to demand better social housing options within Sherbrooke and across Quebec. Organized on International Women’s Day around the theme that “social housing saves women’s lives” the two groups spoke to a collection of roughly 30 individuals about the significant role that affordable housing can play on the safety and security of women in vulnerable situations.

During the presentation, the groups’ spokespeople noted that when alternative housing is easily accessible, women who are victims of domestic violence have options for where to go that can mean the difference between life and death. The current housing crisis, therefore, has a much greater impact than simply questions of where people sleep at night.
