Mayors and municipal officials from across the Townships who are members of the Alliance du corridor ferroviaire Estrie Montérégie (ACFEM), a coalition for the development of local railways, were in Sherbrooke on Monday to publicly sign a letter to Transport Minister Marc Garneau demanding more action with regard to railway safety. “Six years ago we lived a drama at Lac Mégantic,” said Louis Villeneuve, Mayor of Bromont and President of the ACFEM. “My question is, did we learn from it?” Villeneuve explained that the crux of the letter is a call for more transparency and diligence in the inspection and maintenance of the rail lines that cross the region. The Bromont Mayor pointed out that the ACFEM is in support of proposed projects that would see those lines come back into more regular use both for the transport of good and passengers, but he underlined the importance of the tracks being in good condition for any such project to move ahead.
