Midday outage affects thousands

By Gordon Lambie

An errant tree branch left thousands in the townships without power for several hours on Thursday. According to Philippe Cyr of Hydro Quebec, the falling branch took out two different lines, causing emergency equipment to lock down local power networks at the Cookshire transformer station around 11:15 a. m. As a result, some 6,500 clients were deprived of power in the area reaching from Cookshire to North Hatley, with a further 3,600 or so in the dark in Lennoxville. Although Cyr said that some areas were able to get service reestablished faster, the balance of the outage was not resolved until shortly before 3 p.m.
This marks the second significant power outage in Lennoxville in one week, after residents of Len-noxville’s viewpoint neighbourhood were left without power for a large part of the weekend. That eighteen hour blackout came as a result of a transformer fire, and lasted from 6 p.m. Saturday until around noon on Sunday.
