This is the second year in a row that Joan Powell has found what appears to be giant puffball mushrooms in her back yard.
“They’re probably double the size of a basketball, and there are several of them,” she said, noting that the first of the large white fungi came up a few weeks ago and have started to brown and split, but others have popped up in the meantime.
Seen at a distance, the white balls might easily be confused with a squash or child’s plaything left sitting in the grass. On Thursday morning there were about half a dozen ranging from about the size of an adult’s fist to blobs at least 45 centimetres across at Powell’s home near Milby.
