Mixed emotions as Rodriguez-Flores family reaches one year in sanctuary

Tuesday marked one year since Manuel Rodriguez, Georgina Flores, and their son Manolo Rodriguez-Flores took sanctuary in Sherbrooke’s Plymouth-Trinity United Church, seeking refuge from a deportation order that would send them back to Mexico. As a result of the decision, made out of fear of threats against their lives from a drug cartel, the family has not been able to set foot outside of the church building since Nov 8 of 2021.
“Imagine going a whole year without setting one foot outside,” reflected Guy Ouellet who, along with Shanna Bernier, served as spokesperson for the family’s sanctuary support committee.

At the same time as those frustrations were being expressed, Tuesday’s anniversary also brought with it two new developments.
