Last Friday the Eastern Townships division of the Ministere des Transports (MTQ) announced that it has imposed an 18 tonne weight limit on traffic over the Bishop’s Bridge in Lennoxville in light of damage to the road surface. MTQ spokesperson Dominique Gosselin explained that the first step of the new restriction was sharing information about the limitations with pertinent partners as well as though a range of new signage installed at “strategic points” around Sherbrooke. Although damage to the road surface in the form of potholes has been consistent over the past several years due to a combination of heavy traffic and flawed building materials, this is the first time that the concern has been great enough to impose a weight limit on traffic.
