My Take

My Take
The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was Artificial Intelligence.

There’s a world where artificial intelligence would improve lives. A world where mundane elements of our jobs would be eliminated and we’d be free to focus on creativity. A world where the 40-hour work week would become a 20-hour work week – or a four-hour work week. But we don’t live in that world. We live in a world where a few powerful people control most resources.

Artificial intelligence will serve as a tool for the society we have, not the one we want. It will deepen the divide, because the people in control will tell it to.

Though we could see a shorter work week, it’s more likely we’ll see fewer paid workers. Paradoxically, a productive workforce will end up worse off. In a better world, artificial intelligence might’ve been a force for good. In our world, odds are it will only make things worse.
