The adoption of new technology starts off slow, then exponentially increases, before reaching a plateau. It happened with the internet, which existed from the late 80s, but wasn’t ubiquitous in modern life until 2010. What makes AI so scary is not knowing if we’re at the cusp of a similar revolution. If we’re towards the top, then we’ll end up with some incredibly powerful tools that will assist writers, artists, and other creative people in their craft. A few jobs will be lost, but people will likely adapt. If we’re in the middle, we’re going to end up with tools that could change the very nature of these professions.

But if we are only at the beginning…society may be about to undergo another transformation akin to the adoption of the internet, and nobody can tell what that transformation will look like until it’s already happened.
