The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was work/life balance.

Alongside “quiet quitting” & “quiet firing, the Tik Tok trend of “bare minimum Mondays” is another salvo in the “Gen-Z” war on workplace norms. The reaction to it has left me somewhat confused as to what most people are interpreting the bare minimum to be.
Do other people have a different definition of the bare minimum? Does it not mean more or less “the essentials”? Everyone’s essentials at their jobs are different.
The bare minimum of a dairy farmer responsible for animals is probably not that different from their normal workload, whereas a McDonald’s employee could probably jettison half of what corporate wants them to do and the clientele wouldn’t notice or care. The cows need to get milked at a certain time no matter what, but I don’t really care about a forced smile or a soulless platitude when I just want a burger.
