My Take

My Take
The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was pride jerseys.

Let’s stop forcing people who aren’t an ally to wear the colours they don’t support.

How can a member of the LGBTQ+ community feel safe when they aren’t sure if someone wearing their colours is actually supportive or dangerous? Are these athletes supporters or just wearing the jersey and “doing their jobs”?

Pride Night in NHL arenas are taken as seriously as Pink Shirt Day. When the puck drops, the attention is immediately shifted to the game itself. Even the players who wear the jerseys (by choice or not) and take the time to come out for 10 minutes during warmups with a rainbow themed hockey stick choose to ditch the act by the time the game starts. They almost always return to traditional jerseys and traditional black or white tape.

Pride Night shouldn’t be forced on misogynistic, homophobic and rude people in the spotlight.
