The only thing criminal about drug users is the way they are treated by society.
I’m glad BC is taking steps towards decriminalizing drug possession, but it’s a day late and a dollar short.
A hell of a lot more needs to be done to support those most vulnerable to addiction and substance abuse.
I used to live in Vancouver. I’ve seen first-hand the agony on the faces of people living on Skid Row; labouring to walk properly, as though a knee were shoved into their backs; sores all over their faces.
The definition of absolute despair.
And not one of the people living there chose that life for themselves.
It is criminal in the beyond that systemic injustices would strip people of their humanity, then turn around and punish them for latching on to the only means of escape available.
Bring help, not handcuffs.
