Large-scale outages bring to light the fact we’ve become heavily dependent on our technology for daily life. It also highlights the fact that the companies providing these technologies hold a lot of responsibility in ensuring their reliability. The issue comes with the realization that the only responsibility a company truly cares about is the bottom line of its shareholders. Any effort beyond what turns a profit is merely a supplementary means to that end. From a business perspective, proper fail-safes to counteract the unknown unknowns would be more costly than any hit to their public image, so it’s much easier to just turn a blind eye. Of course, for those of us with value beyond a dollar sign, these errors can cost lives, with the loss of emergency contacts and crucial infrastructure. For large companies, our lives do have a price, and it isn’t very much.
