The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was Roe v. Wade.
The Roe v. Wade overturn is one of those things that threatens to fling us backwards as a society. The bill that gave women the freedom to choose in 1973 is one that deserves to stand among the pillars of freedom yet is being threatened by those who wish to take away that freedom from those whose body they don’t own. Factors such as the inability to raise a child, the results of sexual violence, and the plethora of problems associated with an unwanted pregnancy would become irrelevant towards a woman’s right to choose. This not only sets a terrible precedent for women’s rights but also has terrifying implications for democracy when the constitution itself can be reinterpreted on a whim to suit those in power. Regardless of the actual justification for this decision, its implication for what’s possible should be a huge red flag.
