My Take: By Cassie MacDonell

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was national pride.
I love Canada, Ontario, and Quebec. In no way do I respect everything that happened on its grounds—in fact, I am horrified at certain aspects of our history. However, I am thankful to have grown up in a country that allows me as many freedoms as Canada, Ontario, and Quebec does.
I think being a patriot, rather than a nationalist, has allowed me to take a step back and look at the world more clearly. Wanting the best for the country I live in is different than the nationalist ideology of believing the country I live in is perfect the way it is. Believing that the country needs improvement is the first step to reaching a better Canada.
Protesting Bill 96 and Bill 21, reconciling with Indigenous communities, and embracing Canada’s diversity is patriotism to me. Nationalism goes against the very backbone of Canada.
