The pandemic has forced me to be more aware of promises made by government officials, yet at the same time it’s made me lose faith in them.
In the past I’ve been privileged to pay attention to politics at the local or national level at my leisure. Since there is now something that affects my day-to-day life, I have become tuned in to what promises my premiers (Quebec and Nova Scotia), and prime minister make. However now that I’m paying attention, I’ve quickly stopped putting much stock in them.
When “two weeks to flatten the curve” was floated around last spring I believed it. As it turned out to be just a way that government officials eased the population into perpetual lockdown (“two years to eliminate the curve” sounds too jarring), I watched every bit of trust I put in government promises evaporate.
