My Take: By David Rossiter

Language is always an interesting issue in Quebec. As someone who chose to move here as an anglophone, I likely have a different perspective compared to an anglophone born here.
The French language was one of the reasons I chose to go to university in Quebec. I liked the idea of improving my French and truly becoming bilingual for the opportunities it presents (mainly in government work).
I’ve made my biggest strides towards true bilingualism in 2021, after getting a job at The Record. Attending press conferences, interviewing citizens and deciphering press releases in French has truly immersed me in the language after years in the BU bubble. I love improving my French.
I get francophones wanting to protect their language here. I also see why forcing internal communication even for small businesses to be in French, and restricting access to English schools, is controversial.
