Last spring’s abrupt halt to reality has taught us a lot. I think the most glaring realization is to not take anything for granted.
As with all illnesses, there is tragedy and death which can lead to a furthered appreciation of life. I think that lots of the things that we’ve learned to not take for granted are smaller and more insignificant than life itself. Yet together, they are so important.
Seeing stranger’s smiles, now shrouded by cloth, on public transportation or in lineups. Extending an invite to your cookout without worrying about going over a gathering limit. The simple handshake with an older gentleman you met while having breakfast at Pizzaville.
All small, insignificant things, but comforting in a way. People may disagree about them having been taken away at all, but as a whole we understand how integral they are to human nature.
