The 21st-century starts now. Historically. Not on the calendar. 9/11? A halfway marker.

The long Edwardian tail of the Victorian era was lopped off during a land war in Europe followed by a pandemic.

The long tail of the post-Cold War has fallen off during a pandemic followed by land war in Europe.

This superficial comparison also recalls a regime collapse in Moscow. In lieu of viable diplomatic off-ramps, many are hoping that too will repeat. As then, what fills the void can also bring conflict.

I was 12 when the Wall fell. But I remember this head-spinning feeling of history counting in days, not decades.

The face of what follows is still hidden. As one mask falls, a thousand new ones lay waiting on the dressing table. Which resembles your wishes for the future?
