My Take: By Geoff Agombar

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was accountability.
Honestly, these My Takes are a stressful end to the week. Standing behind my own opinion in my own voice weighs on my anxieties. I try to find some clever formula and hit the 150-word count bang on. Clever formulae stroke my ego. Puzzles too. They pull me up into a sparkling, heady, prideful place. They drown out the rootier sounds of self-judgement and doubt, the fear of public exposure.
Everything we do in public is permanent and political. It is so much easier when I amplify the words I heard someone else say and they sounded good, or elevate the acts someone else did and they were good.
“I know it when I see it” is often called on to fill in when definitions get tricky. I’ll know it when I don’t, will cover others. Accountability is so much easier to demand than deliver.
