My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week the topic was Mother’s Day.

My children have informed me that I am forbidden to die, but as I move into a chapter of my life where my parents talk about their own mortality more seriously, It doesn’t really seem realistic to take the same position.
This year has been a bit of an unwelcome preview of Joni Mitchell’s observation that “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone.” I know that forced separation is not the same things as complete loss, and we’ve been able to do some remarkable things with video conferencing and telephone calls since March of 2020, but it’s hard not to feel like there are lost moments that we will never be able to get back.
In an average year I probably would just call my mom for Mother’s Day, but at this point I think I’d give just about anything for a hug.
