The idea of COVID-19 as something serious became real for me when the NBA suspended the basketball season back in March. Before long, there were times when I joked that The Record should just run the words “No Sports” on our usual sports page.
In the end, I think “no sports” couldn’t be farther from the truth.
The park at the end of my street has been busier than ever this spring with people playing tennis, pickleball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, spikeball, bocce, shuffleboard, hockey and ultimate frisbee. I have seen more people running, swimming, cycling and driving down the road with kayaks on their cars than I can even count.
It’s fair to say that 2020 is not a great year to be a sports spectator, but to call it a year without sports would be way off the mark as far as I’m concerned.
