Francois Legault has been up in arms recently, defending his idea of what values define Quebec as a nation. The ideas he is promoting are not new, but the way he is positioning himself and others in the conversation is dangerous.
The Premier insists he is speaking for the majority of Quebecers, and has established himself as a champion who is working to defend against people who “want to make us feel guilty” and who “see discrimination everywhere,” but if enough people are talking about discrimination that it comes up in conversation daily, shouldn’t the people elected to represent everyone at least consider to what is being said?
Denial is not the path to a just society, and presenting those who speak up for their rights or the rights of others as enemies of the nation turns already vulnerable populations into targets for further abuse.
