My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week the topic was Thanksgiving.

I associate holidays with long car trips. In my childhood it was generally drives from the Laurentians to visit grandparents in Lancaster, Toronto, or the Gatineau Hills. These days the destinations are different, and I’m generally in the driver’s seat instead of the back, but a lot of the feelings are the same.
Those trips trained me to always be looking out the window for something new. I’m not going to make the claim that I’ve never been bored in the car, but an impulse to hunt for quirky signage, unusual licence plates, or familiar landmarks along the way has a way of keeping things interesting, at least for me.
I wish I could say it was as effective a tool for some of the younger passengers in the car, but maybe with enough games of “I spy” and “20 questions” we’ll get there someday.
