My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was accountability.

Writing for a living makes you acutely aware of just how true it is that everyone makes mis-takes. Try as you might to proofread and double-check details, eventually something ends up in print that just doesn’t look quite right and you’re left to face the judgement or confusion of your readers.
It’s part of the reason why systems of checks and balances exist in the world. Typos might be the context that I live with, but there are much more serious errors that can be made, with much more serious consequences.
It is important that someone be there to double check the details when matters of finance, public health, or individual lives hang in the balance, but let’s not pretend that’s an easy job. I’ve never heard an ode to an auditor, and I can understand why, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important work.
