My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was bake sales.

It’s been bizarre, having no bazaars. I know that some took place last year in adapted formats, and others are working on making their comeback, but it’s here in the pre-Christmas, bazaar and bake sale season that the lingering elements of social distancing feel most striking to me.
Remember the pushback against the term “social distancing?” The idea being that we should focus on creating physical distance, but not social isolation?
As much as I like that idea, it turns out that doesn’t really work in practice. Staying away from other people is social distancing, whether we call it that or not, and once you build a wall between yourself and the world, it takes some time to knock it down.
For me the bake sales and bazaars have never really been about handicrafts or brownies, but about getting out and seeing people in the community.
