I know very few people who work in journalism and believe in the idea of a one-stop shop for news. Almost everyone who is doing this work starts their day by looking at a variety of media to see what is being said about the areas that they cover.
No one report is ever going to tell the whole story. There are too many perspectives, and too many different ways of sharing them, to make the claim that any one report is going to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Readers need to look for the places where stories fit together, and where they do not, to get a look at the bigger picture.
Just skimming is not enough though. Critical reading involves taking more than one quick look and asking questions about how the information is presented and why.
