My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was a wild card.

It’s looking like one of the great casualties of this pandemic has been the way we talk to one another.

Toxic internet debate is nothing new, but people have been immersed in it these past two years because the internet has become such a big part of the way we communicate. Writing traditionally offers more time to think about what is being said, but it seems like many of the things that end up on social media haven’t been given more than a second’s thought.

Maybe this is just shedding light on disagreements that always existed but never made it to the surface in face-to-face conversations, but isn’t it possible that the tools we’re using to talk are fanning otherwise minor flames? It’s a question that’s worth considering.

What I know for sure is that long-term exposure to toxic materials is rarely a good thing.
