My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was the Royal visit.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla visited Canada this week, and I wonder how many Canadians even noticed. I’m sure there was plenty of fanfare at the three stops the future King of Canada made along the way, but if it wasn’t my job to pay attention to the news I honestly don’t know if the whole affair would have caught my eye.
In a country where practically every second street is named after a British lord or past monarch, it’s impossible to deny the role that empire had in shaping the Canada of today. I wonder, though, whether there will be much interest in maintaining that relationship after the current Queen dies.
Although countless Canadians have sworn allegiance to Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors over the last 70 years, the royal family feels pretty irrelevant to most of our daily lives.
