My Take: By Gordon Lambie

My Take: By Gordon Lambie

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was convocation.

We’ve picked convocation as our theme this week, which more or less guarantees that “pomp and circumstance” will be playing in my head for the rest of the day.

Graduation ceremonies are strange beasts. For individual students, they are celebrations of personal achievement, and yet they take place in vast assemblies. People will reflect on “my convocation” but the experience ends up being more about the crowd than any one person.

It can be a bit different in a smaller school, where time and circumstances allow for a more intimate group to celebrate together, but at the end of the day it is still gathering in a room to sit uncomfortably together for a few hours listening to speeches that may or may not be very interesting.

Maybe weirdest of all is that despite this critique, I’ll still show up to one, given the invitation.
