My Take: By Gordon Lambie

There is a powerful temptation to dissociate ourselves when an individual or group that has done something wrong, saying things like “I’m not catholic, so what the pope says has no bearing on my life.”
And okay, sure. But isn’t that just avoiding the issue?
We can all stand back and pick away at the wording of a speech that was never going to be universally accepted, but unless we are all looking at the way our own lives have benefitted and continue to benefit from systems of oppression, here and around the world, then all we’re doing is playing oppression hot potato and waiting for our turn to be the one stuck in the spotlight.
Commentary is an important part of keeping important issues in focus, but if all you’re doing is commenting, then get off your high horse and take a look around.
