My Take: By Lawrence Belanger

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was winter.

I came to Quebec in part because I decided that if I was going to have to experience cold dreariness, I might as well have it look like how winter is portrayed in stories and media. New England is supposed to have snow on the ground by American Thanksgiving, but that’s today and a quick check of the snow cover in Massachusetts shows…nothing. Yes, the snowstorm last week caught me off guard, summer tires still on my vehicle, and yes, I still need to buy replacements for my boots that fell apart at the end of last winter, but that’s not winter’s fault! Positives of winter are inherent to winter (pretty snow, warm beverages, classy coats). The negatives are because of human imperfections and the obligations of a society that values production at any cost.
