My Take: By Marianne Lassonde

The language debate is one of those topics where you don’t realize just how deeply rooted it is until you are in the thick of it. I think back to the many suppers where my dad insisted we speak French, or the times he would correct me because I had mispronounced a word.
Part of me understands my father’s worries, but it is a dated fear. I love the fact that I am bilingual – heck, we should expect everyone to be bilingual! But the government is making it increasingly difficult to have an English education. You know, for someone who loves French, Legault sure loves gatekeeping the English.
I agree that bragging about only being able to speak one of our official languages is disgusting – yes, I’m looking at you, English provinces. But Quebec needs to realize we are in dire need to adapt linguistically.
