My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week the topic was: holiday traditions and memories.

One of my favourite holiday traditions is our family’s Christmas pageant.
Not gonna lie, it tends to go a little off book.
I’m pretty sure Mary’s costume was once a prom dress, and the baby Jesus is played by a cabbage patch kid named Fred, but hey, the message is there.
The whole thing happens around a hay bale and a bunch of boxes taped together.
The animals in the stable are the family dogs.
Casting is a challenge, but somehow my mom always manages to recruit the nephew whose voice is changing that year to narrate.
It’s enchanting. There’s music. Silent Night. Away in a Manger. Jingle Bells.
The performances range from ‘this is so embarrassing don’t look at me’ to ‘I waited for three years to be Mary, don’t mess this up for me, Joseph.’
One year the angel Gabriel kidnapped baby Jesus.
