My Take: By Matthew McCully

The only thing I remember enjoying about going back to school was new clothes.
I wasn’t the most social butterfly in the kaleidoscope, so there was no big rush to get back and reconnect with friends. I was a pretty average student, so new learning challenges weren’t a big draw either.
But a week before school started, without fail, my mom would disappear for a shopping excursion and return with a pair of crisp new jeans for each kid in the family, along with a few cool t-shirts, a nice warm sweater… And my favourite, new sneakers that smelled like rubber.
I used to walk around the house to break the shoes in and practice my strut for when I headed back to the schoolyard.
I can’t imagine what’s going through the heads of kids these days.
I just hope they keep their heads up.
