My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was: the vaccination deadline extension.

I doubt vaccine hesitancy is the only reason close to 20,000 healthcare workers refused to get inoculated against COVID-19.
I suspect getting strong-armed by the government after being overworked for years to keep a mismanaged healthcare system afloat was the straw that broke the camel’s back for a substantial chunk of health sector non-vaxxers.
I can’t say I agree with refusing the jab as a tactic. It’s literally playing with peoples’ lives, not to mention the psychological impact it has on people with a chronic health issue, worried about the potential collapse of the healthcare system due to absentee workers.
But I hope the message was received loud and clear, and over the next month the government adopts a new approach, geared more towards cooperation instead
of bullying.
At this point, the issue that needs to be addressed is distrust of government, not Covid denial.
