My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was bake sales.

Last week Gordon walked into the office, back from yet another stressful assignment and said, can’t there just be a bake sale somewhere? It’s been a running joke ever since.
You see, it has been a heavy few months here in the newsroom. Lots of important issues to cover.
Every now and then it’s nice to slip away from that and get the lowdown on a bake sale or a spaghetti supper. Who cooked what, how many volunteers participated, what are we raising money for today, look what so-and-so donated to the cause.
It’s heartwarming and a pleasure to write about.
But what I have to keep reminding myself is that all the civil unrest we’ve been covering recently; the protests, the strikes, the inquiries, the reports.
These are all catalysts for change.
Also, many great things around us started with a simple bake sale.
