My Take: by Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was emergency services.

Issues with the healthcare system were exacerbated by the pandemic, but they are certainly not new.

Maybe after the provincial government sits in discomfort and uncertainty about the future for a few months, it will start to understand what the average Quebecer in a health crisis goes through waiting for services and finally address the problem head on.
Decades of mismanagement from successive governments, each one reinventing the wheel, has led to a complete disconnect from the needs of Quebecers and the giant machine in disrepair the healthcare system has become.

And broken promises just add insult to injury.

There’s no easy fix, and I’m sure great minds are working on solutions. But with so many shortfalls, maybe it’s time to look at the model as a whole.

More money or more employees might offer a band-aid solution, but neither of those can perform miracles.
