My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was thinking long term.

The situation won’t improve in healthcare, or education, or any other sector for that matter, as long as politicians can’t look any further ahead than the next election.
It also doesn’t help that the collective memory of the population is on par with that of a goldfish.
There are studies upon studies pointing to longstanding problems in healthcare, and pages upon pages of recommendations, most of which are ignored, because a committee is always formed to study the feasibility of implementing recommendations, and that takes time. And once the study is complete, the situation has changed, so the recommendation is outdated, and a new study is commissioned.
Looks a lot like a make-work program for rich political friends with, at best, a cursory understanding of an issue.
It is time for politicians to shift their focus to sustainability and serving the population instead of self-preservation.
