My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was bystander.

As much as I want to be angry with the inaction of world leaders in the leadup to the invasion of Ukraine, I am just sitting here, powerless, feeling paralyzed, watching in absolute despair.
I can’t understand why this is happening, but I fully understand how.
Horrible things are surreal, and people aren’t programmed to react properly.
When I was younger, learning about war, I wondered how anyone could stand by and allow such atrocities to happen.
At the time, my worldview was so narrow I wasn’t aware of my own privilege, or the fact that I was complicit in the suffering of multitudes, simply by limiting my concerns to the four walls around me.
I was checking the news wire for an article to publish about Ukraine.
The first one I saw today warned of the hike in gas prices the invasion would cause.
