My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was Father’s Day.

Picture it, New Richmond, 1983. Little English Matthew gets on the bus and heads to kindergarten, as he had many times before. On this particular day, though, he was especially stoked, because it was the first day he would ever have one of those Handi-Snacks cheese and crackers packets in his lunch box, after begging mom to buy them for months.
Imagine his disappointment when he arrived at school, only to discover he’d misunderstood French instructions, and wasn’t supposed to attend class that day.
He stewed in the hallway, waiting for dad, with the only vehicle in the family, to slip away from work and pick him up.
Upon arrival, dad reached out his arms to console a sobbing Matthew, only to receive his lunch box, at full force, to the side of the head.
I’ll never live it down. Sorry dad, Happy Father’s Day.
