My Take – By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was Hockey Canada.

I don’t know why anyone is shocked by the actions of Hockey Canada. It’s just the locker room for men who outgrew the rink.
And if you’ve ever been in a locker room, you know damn well it’s not a safe space for anyone who doesn’t fit a very particular mold.
So here we are, having to reconcile our love for this national sport with the ugly truth.
I’m sure for lots of white men, hockey memories are just like those heartwarming Tim Hortons commercials.
But there’s a very different side-not to the sport itself-but to the industry surrounding it, and the systems it perpetuates.
Ever notice how hockey players act during interviews after a game?
More articulate and measured than seasoned politicians; like they’d studied a handbook on how to act in public.
Pity there isn’t a chapter on how to behave in private.
