My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was the pandemic blame game.

I think the pandemic should go down in history as the great global I told you so.
We are just now starting to see that the holes in our safety nets are way too big to catch anyone falling, and that cutting the corners of our foundations has many of our systems and institutions on the brink of collapse.
None of this is happening strictly because of the pandemic.
There were warning signs long before the societal shortfalls we are now facing came to light.
I don’t think it’s fair to conjure up the collective trauma of the pandemic to solicit absolution for politicians, or excuse unscrupulous behaviour from corporations.
Now that the sky has fallen, let’s be more thoughtful in how we piece it back together.
We’ve proven that when it matters, we can do extraordinary things in the name of helping each other.
