My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was abusive behavoiur towards politicians.

If you want to hit a politician where it really hurts, do it in the voting booth.
And while you’re waiting, just sit back and watch them shoot themselves in the foot.
A microphone and an audience will do a hell of a lot more damage to a politician than a pie in the face.
There is literally nothing to be gained by harassing or attacking these people.
If anything, it will have the opposite effect and turn them into martyrs.
And the next thing you know, public access gets cut off. Too many security issues, and more and more events happen behind closed doors or cameras, where it is painfully easy to control the narrative.
We need these politicians out among us, milling around shopping malls, high-fiving joggers and kissing babies.
And listening to us.
Yelling obscenities is unlikely to attract a sympathetic ear.
