My Take: By Matthew McCully

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was winter. Is it weird that some of my fondest memories are of winter, but I still hate it?

Maybe it’s because the comfort that comes with warming up after a day outside outweighs the shivering.

I grew up on the Gaspé and we used to go skiing at a hill called Saint Edgar.

The chalet smelled so good, like burgers and burning firewood. And there was this magical chopper attached to the wall. I used to watch the kitchen workers put a potato on top, pull the lever, and then perfectly cut fries would fall into a bucket.

They were greasy and delicious.

I was always in tears when it was time to leave, but on the car ride home, my body would begin to catch up to how cold I had been all day.

Thawing my feet in the tub was excruciating. But worth it.
