My Take: By Matthew Sylvester

By Matthew Sylvester

You have probably heard of what’s going on inside the walls of the Governor General’s residence by now. The Julie Payette Scandal is the talk of the entire country. Luckily, it seems like most people are treating the whole situation with the sort of respect it deserves by being aware but not jumping too far ahead of the investigation and drawing their own conclusions. People more in the public eye sometimes aren’t so lucky. It has happened to plenty of celebrities. It’s happening to Ellen Degeneres right now. While you’ve got to be able to sympathize with the people who make allegations against public figures, I think you also need to realize the dangerous precedent that cancel culture sets. It’s trial by public opinion, and public opinion is way worse at figuring out who’s innocent and who’s guilty than a real court of law is.
