My Take: By Michael Boriero

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was the cessation of print editions.

I read on Twitter yesterday the Montreal Gazette has joined a long line of daily newspapers in making yet another difficult decision to reduce its print edition services. This time Quebecers who subscribe to the longstanding newspaper will say goodbye to the Monday print edition.
I love newspapers. I love rifling through the pages, reading the news of the day, glancing over columns and photos, noting down the authors and chuckling at the odd cartoon that catches my eye. And honestly, I love the smell of it. But I can hardly say I’m surprised by this decision.
The decline in print media has been staggering and well-documented. I’m not at all happy to see an institution like the Montreal Gazette diminished to just a handful of pages. But it appears they’re making an effort to go digital.
Like so many, they’re playing catch-up.
