My Take: By Michael Boriero

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week the topic was language.

I’ve always had a weird relationship with the French language. When I was younger, I used to complain that we were forced to study French in school.
It’s not an easy language to learn. I still have nightmares of that little green book — the dreaded Bescherelle. But as I got older, I started to understand the value of being bilingual.
When it comes to the language debate, what I can tell you is that it doesn’t need to be so heated. I think there are clear benefits to learning different languages.
But I don’t understand why it has to be an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ situation. Yes, I know this issue has a deep and complicated history.
Does it need to be a political weapon in 2021? Quebec threatening to infringe on English-language minority rights is not the answer. There has to be a solution.
